Write a Will Week launches
27th October 2009 by: David Maxwell
New figures reveal almost 28m Brits are living without wills as the country enters national Write a Will Week.
Professional advice website, Unbiased.co.uk, have launched the scheme, which started on 26th October, after discovering that 57% of the adult population do not have a will. The week is aimed at informing the public of the benefits of will writing and answering questions they may have about the process.
The most common reason Brits don't have a will is ‘apathy’. 43% of those surveyed claimed that they just “haven’t got round to sorting it yet”, while 14% claim it had “never occurred” to them to write a will.
Karen Barrett, Chief Executive of Unbiased.co.uk, said this week: “If you haven’t got a will, your only legacy could be to leave a large inheritance tax bill for your loved ones. We have launched Write a Will Week to encourage the public to make formal plans should the worst happen.”
Although having a Will prepared is relatively inexpensive, 13% of those surveyed claimed that they had not made wills due to fears about costs. Ms Barrett, however, believes that the public should be encouraged to obtain professional advice in order to ensure that their estates are distributed according to their wishes.
“Seeking professional legal and financial advice from a solicitor and Independent Financial Advisor (IFA) means you can get your affairs in order so that your family or friends receive the inheritance you want them to.”
