Repossessions most common within UK cities

13th May 2010 by: Andrew Jacobs
More properties are being repossessed in UK city centres than elsewhere in the country, with London the country’s biggest hotspot for court action, according to research from leading estate agents.

London was home to the greatest number of repossessions in the first quarter of 2010, with 66% more properties taken into possession than the second-worst city hit, Birmingham, and 6% of all repossessions taking place in the capital.

Disproportionately high property prices are considered by many to be causing widespread repossessions, as borrowers have overstretched themselves in order to buy, finding themselves unable to meet their mortgage repayments.

The recession’s impact on homeownership has been well documented, and, while the government tries to increase provisions for first time buyers, those already struggling to meet mortgage payments have also been let down by escalating inflation and the unpredictable nature of house prices and unemployment rates.

Results show that the Country’s top 10 repossession hotspots include:
  • London (6.09%)
  • Birmingham (2.29%)
  • Manchester (2.22%)
  • Liverpool (2.14%)
  • Belfast (2.06%)
  • Nottingham (1.82%)
  • Craigavon (1.34%)
  • Peterborough (1.27%)
  • Coventry (1.19%)
  • Leeds (1.19%)

To avoid further misery, homeowners looking to downsize and reduce mortgage troubles are encouraged to approach local solicitors as soon as possible. Expert advice and an efficient sales process can be the difference between one more missed payment and a comfortable life elsewhere.
