The Starting Over Show - Brighton
17th March 2009 by: David Lillywhite
With the divorce rate in England having grown by 52% in the past year, there is an increasing demand for a more holistic approach to divorce proceedings. This weekend saw Brighton play host to the UK’s first divorce fair called The Starting Over Show.
Held in a hotel located close to the seaside town’s famous beachfront, The Starting Over Show’s remit was to recognise and highlight the positive benefits that a fresh start can bring, mixing practical advice from qualified solicitors, financial advisers and divorce coaches with more alternative offerings from chiropractors, tarot card-readers and franchise opportunities for single parents.
Self-styling the exhibition as a “safe haven” for husbands and wives at any stage of their separation, the ultimate aim of the show was to give separating spouses the time and space to explore their feelings and receive advice on moving on with their lives in an environment they would feel secure in.
Also in attendance was relationship counselling service Relate which provides access to counselling and mediation for families going through divorce. Seddons has recently been forging links with a number of local psychologists and psychiatrists with a view to providing greater emotional support to our clients who are finding the divorce process overwhelming. Deborah Jeff, Head of Family at Seddons, has recently written two support articles for our website entitled the emotional consequences of divorce and separation and 5 Steps to Surviving Divorce which explore this in more detail.
With the number of divorcing couples on the increase in England and Wales, the success of The Starting Over Show suggests that there is a real appetite for a solution that encompasses all aspects of a separation from the legal to the emotional. The Family Team at Seddons encourages a conciliatory approach to divorce proceedings wherever possible and can recommend mediators, counsellors and psychologists to help you adjust to your new family circumstances.
Seddons offers a free 30 minute consultation to all new family clients.
