Victoria Whitlock, in her regular Evening Standard Column, “The Accidental Landlord” tells a tale of woe about a tenant that cannot cover the full rent.
The situation had arisen because the tenant had fallen out with his ex-girlfriend who had previously shared a flat with him and contributed to the expenses, including the rent.

Victoria reached a deal with her tenant which included taking the arrears from the deposit.  When the tenant moved out, there was still a shortfall in the money due to her.

Seddons Property Litigation Partner, John Midgley, is quoted as saying:-

“Sometimes it’s not worth the time and expense taking tenants to court, especially over relatively small amounts.  Your legal fees might be more than the rent you’d recover”.
